Description:

The Department of Health delivers a comprehensive package of services to people in the Western Cape. Child Health care services integrated into services provided at all the levels of care include:

  • Prevention, promotion, management of childhood illnesses and rehabilitative services.
  • Including Maternal Health, Nutrition, HIV/AIDS and Mental Health with a focus on the first 1000 days of life.
  • Intersectoral collaboration to improve service delivery and achievement of strategic goals.
  • The Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (lMCl) guideline offer simple, effective methods to manage the leading causes of serious illness and mortality in children (birth up to under 5 years). IMCI forms the platform in Primary Health Care and hospital out-patients to assess all aspects of the child’s health. The most common health problems in children are addressed with special focus on respiratory infections, diarrhoea, measles, malnutrition and HIV.

Services provided:​

  • Assessment of immunisation, nutrition and feeding
  • All children must be screened for HIV, TB and Development 
  • Growth monitoring and promotion (RTHB) 
  • Each condition is assessed, classified and treatment identified
  • Caretakers are taught to care for the child at home
  • Infant and young child feeding support and when to return to the health facility
  • Follow-up care is provided
