Provincial Treasury's Moveable Asset Management directorate hosted a Supplier Open Day in the Cape Winelands on 26 November 2009.

The event was a pilot collaboration between Provincial Treasury, the Department of Economic Development and Tourism (the 2 Departments have the shared mandate of Economic Empowerment in the Province), the Cape Winelands District, Breede Valley, Stellenbosch and Drakenstein Municipalities.

The premise of the initiative is to expose the business community of the Cape Winelands to all the opportunities there are of doing business with government, both at Provincial and Local level, foster relations between the stakeholders of BBBEE and SMME Development, harness cohesion between Local Economic Development and Supply Chain Management in Municipalities and inform the Public on the compliance requirements in Government Procurement. The event also provided an opportunity to strengthen the inter-governmental relations between the Provincial and Local spheres of Government.

Following months of rigorous planning and juggling of schedules, the Supplier Open Day finally took place in Worcester on 26 November 2009, showcasing a combination of exhibition stalls and formal presentations by SARS, CIDB, Nedbank and BEE Empowered, a verification agency

Proceedings started with attendees arriving by bus from the various municipalities in the Cape Winelands District (the Cape Winelands District Municipality sponsored the buses for the event). Catering for the day was sponsored by the Department of Economic Development and Tourism.

Mr Kennedy Gaya, Assistant Director: Human Resource Development, Provincial Treasury, who agreed to MC the Open Day at very short notice, beautifully navigated the events of the day

Presentations covered issues around tax compliance (VAT, Tax Clearance certificate etc.). Nedbank presented on matters affecting small businesses and BEE Empowered covered the Codes of Good Practice, the draft Preferential Procurement Regulations and BEE Verification. The CIDB informed the audience of best practice guidelines, registration requirements and tendering in the highly competitive Construction Industry.

The event was a huge success as it attracted 250-300 attendees. Good interaction from the crowd was observed during the Q&A sessions following presentations and enquiries logged at the vendor stalls totalled 619 enquiries (obtained from attendance registers at vendor stalls).
