WCG mourns the loss of a champion of the arts sector, Anele Maki

23 December 2021

The Western Cape Government is saddened at the news of the death Mr Anele Maki, a passionate supporter of the arts in the country.

Maki, based in Mbekweni in Paarl, founded a youth-based organization called Massive Productions, which offered youth the opportunity to learn more about various aspects of theatre productions. He also aimed to weave lessons about avoiding social ills in all activities, and actively provided youth in the Mbekweni area with healthy alternatives to getting drawn into these social ills.

Maki served in various structures in the cultural and creative industries, including the Federation of Community Arts Centres in the Western Cape. Most recently, he held the position of Deputy Secretary of the Cultural and Creative Industries Federation of South Africa (CCIFSA).

Minister Anroux Marais said: “The loss of Anele Maki is truly a huge blow to the arts and creative industry in the province. He was passionate about working with youth and helping them rise above their circumstances to follow their dreams. His contribution to the arts in our province was immeasurable.”

Our condolences go out to Anele Maki’s family, friends and colleagues. His legacy will continue to live on in all those whose lives he touched through his passion for development in the arts.
