The Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) launched the Cape Winelands and West Coast Museum Route brochure on 15 May 2017. The launch took place at the Togryers Museum in Ceres.
The brochure showcases museum activities and services to the public, while also helping museums on the route to become tourist attractions, thereby enabling them to contribute to the economic growth of their communities.
The guests were officially welcomed by the Mayor of the Witzenberg Municipality, Mr Klaasen, who thanked DCAS and the Western Cape Government for all the support that is provided to museums.
Shadow Minister of Tourism, James Vos also attended the event and said that the launch of the brochure provided an opportunity to celebrate the value of museums to communities. ”Museums give us an opportunity to reflect on the past and future of our country,“ said Vos.
In her keynote address, DCAS minister Anroux Marais said the brochure will assist in closing the gap between museums and the public. ”Through the brochure, we are now able to communicate the insightful activities and services provided by our museums,“ she said.
The Minister also handed over cheques to nine museums in the Cape Winelands and West Coast regions.
The amounts for each museum are listed below:
The funds will assist the museums with their daily operational costs and enable them to keep their doors open for the public.
Through the launch of the museum brochure, DCAS is making available information about museums, thereby encouraging communities to learn about their history by supporting their local museums - BETTER TOGETHER.
