National Immunisation Coverage Survey

The National Department of Health, the Wits Health Consortium and the National Institute for Communicable Diseases (NICD) are organising an immunisation coverage survey across the country. The survey will start at the end of January 2019 and run for three months. The purpose of this survey is to find out about the immunisation coverage in South Africa. All children in South Africa (South African and foreign) will be eligible to be surveyed. Fieldworkers who have been identified and trained by the Wits Health Consortium will visit pre-selected households to check the Road to Health Booklets (RTHB) or immunisation cards of the children residing there.
Children from 24 to 35 months of age who slept in that household the night before the survey will have their RTHB or immunisation card checked. The child does not have to be present when the fieldworkers visit but the RTHB or card should be available. Researchers will choose households throughout South Africa and only these households will be visited by the fieldworkers. The fieldworkers were involved with the last national census and will wear t-shirts or bibs with easily recognised RTHB branding.
