If having a good-paying job or a business of your own is 1 of your goals, then studying at a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college might be suited for you. With a choice from a wide variety of courses to choose from, a TVET college education can provide you with all the necessary skills and knowledge you need for your career.
TVET Colleges fall under the national Department of Higher Education and Training, equipped to educate and train at a tertiary level to provide you with your pathway to career success.
Why you should consider going to a TVET college
Who can attend a TVET college?
As part of the Higher Education system, TVET Colleges accept students who've completed Grade 9, 10, 11 or 12 at high school level. University post-graduates can also enrol for courses at TVET Colleges for more practical exposure.
A big benefit of attending a TVET college is the high focus on the employability of students where part of the curriculum requires the students to complete experiential training (internships and apprenticeships) which helps build up experience on your CV.
Not all colleges offer the same courses. First do some research on courses offered by colleges which interest you. TVET colleges offer courses in the hospitality, food service, and tourism industries, hair care, early childhood development, and management (financial, human resource, marketing, and administration, to name a few).
There are 50 TVET colleges across South Africa, of which 6 are located in the Western Cape. This means that almost every major region in the Western Cape has a TVET College campus. The courses offered are accredited and independently monitored to ensure they meet quality standards and accreditation by the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO), meaning that the quality of education and training is internationally benchmarked.
