World Humanitarian Day is a global celebration of people helping people.
The 2015 World Humanitarian Day theme is “Inspiring the World's Humanity” and this year the day serves as an opportunity to get involved and celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the world.
South Africa has seen its own form of humanitarians over the years. These are people who have made a difference in all of our lives such as Nelson Mandela, Ahmed Kathrada and Archbishop Desmond Tutu.
5 humanitarian organisations doing great work in the Western Cape
The Salvation Army reaches out to communities in need by providing humanitarian aid through its various health services and outreach programmes for abused women and children. During winter, this organisation holds soup kitchens and blanket drives.
This organisation empowers unemployed mothers to have the skills to become financially as well as socially independent in order to provide for their children. They also supply clothing to people who are in organisational care.
3. True North
True North sets new standards for the education and holistic development of pre-school children and their caregivers by preparing them to reach their full potential which they are born with.
4. NOAH
NOAH provides homes and services to the elderly in the Western Cape as a means of creating homes rather than institutions for their residents.
This organisation believes in developing communities by developing people through listening to the real needs of a community in order to bring a positive and lasting change.
If you want to lend a hand, you can get involved with one of these organisations and start to make a difference in the lives of those less fortunate this World Humanitarian Day.
Celebrating our Humanitarian Heroes
On World Humanitarian Day, we remember all those humanitarians who brought about change in South Africa. Show your support this by helping someone in need, whether it be your friend or neighbour or by donating any unwanted items to an organisation or a shelter that will put it to good use, because every bit counts.
You can help create awareness for others who are in need by using the #ShareHumanity hashtag on social media to show you care and to share your humanitarian stories.
