Last night, the WCED celebrated the achievements of our Province’s schools who produced excellent results and improvements in our Grade 3, 6 and 9 language and mathematics systemic tests in 2019.
The WCED is the only provincial education department to conduct its own systemic testing in Mathematics and Language.
The tests are conducted annually and allow the WCED to identify specific areas where work is needed to improve our learner’s abilities in these key subjects.
They also identify excellence and schools where there have been marked improvements. This allows us to share best practice and celebrate the hard work and commitment of the teachers at these schools.
Last night the WCED awarded schools in two categories. The first is the category of Excellence in Academic Performance – where we schools have achieved over 75% and above in the systemic tests.
The second category was Improvement in Academic Performance in Grades 3, 6 and 9. The WCED measures improvement by the increase in the number of learners who achieved more than 50% in the Language and Mathematics tests for the period 2017–2019. These schools each received a certificate as well as R10 000 for the purchase of learning and teaching support material.
Nal’ikamva Primary School in Mfuleni, for example, increased the number of learners who achieved more than 50% in the Language and Mathematics tests for the period 2017–2019 by 73 learners.
The WCED congratulates all schools who received awards last night. We are very proud of their achievements and their commitment towards achieving our vision for quality education for every child, in every classroom, in every school in the Province.
