Today, the Department of Local Government, in partnership with the Government communication and Information System (GCIS) Cape Winelands District Municipality and Drakenstein Local Municipality, proudly launched its two-day Annual Thusong Outreach event at the Saron Community Hall. Under the theme “30 Years of Democracy,” this event is part of the Thusong Annual Week and coincides with the celebration of Public Service Month, aiming to connect community members with essential government services.
Alderman Gert Combrink opened the event with a heartfelt welcome, expressing gratitude to attendees and emphasizing the importance of outreach initiatives in bridging the gap between government services and local communities, particularly in Saron.
Ald. (Dr) Helena von Schlicht, Executive Mayor of the Cape Winelands District Municipality, delivered a powerful message, highlighting the critical role of the Thusong Programme in assisting communities and improving residents' quality of life through access to essential services.
Advocate Ashley Searle, Commissioner of the Public Service Commission, provided an inspiring keynote address focused on the vital role of public servants. He stated, “Public servants are essential in our fight against poverty and in delivering vital services to our communities,” motivating attendees to continue their efforts for positive change.
Following the speeches, participants had the opportunity to engage with various government departments and service providers, accessing essential services including social services, healthcare, home affairs, and local development.
This outreach event underscores the commitment of the Thusong Programme to reduce poverty and empower individuals by enhancing access to public services. By strengthening collaboration between government and communities, the event aims to build a brighter future for all residents of the Western Cape.
