Clean Up and Recycle Project: Transforming Macassar’s environmental landscape

Macassar, Monday, 18 March 2024 - The Clean-Up and Recycle Project launched on Global Recycle Day near a notorious dumping site in Macassar, aiming to combat improper waste disposal and promote sustainable practices.

The event commenced with an engaging program featuring various speakers addressing the community on responsible waste management. BINGO, the friendly mascot, distributed informative pamphlets and interacted with attendees. Volunteers joined participants in the day's activities.

The project plans eight environmental education sessions across different communities, focusing on "Reduce," "Reuse," and "Recycle" principles.

Attendees gained insights into profitable recycling opportunities and potential job creation in the recycling sector.

Mr. Peter Helfrich, Ward Councillor for Ward 109, City of Cape Town, expressed, "Today, on Global Recycling Day, we took a significant step forward in fulfilling our collective responsibility to safeguard the environment. By partnering with the City of Cape Town Metropolitan Municipality and the Western Cape Government, we're preserving our natural surroundings and fostering a cleaner, healthier community for generations to come."

Mr Heinrich Magerman, Director for Community Development Worker Programme at the Department of Local Government added, "Today’s event is part of ongoing efforts to ensure sustainable development and working in partnership with communities, the City of Cape Town and the Community Development Worker Programme of the Department of Local Government”

Community members, local organizations, and businesses are encouraged to participate in the Clean-Up and Recycling Event and attend subsequent environmental education sessions.
