It was a night of glitz, glam, the arts, theatre, dance and heritage, to name a few, as the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS) hosted its annual Western Cape Cultural Affairs Awards ceremony at the Baxter Theatre on Monday, 9 February 2015 in spectacular fashion.
Since its inception in 1999, DCAS has awarded various organisations and individuals who have made a profound impact in the arts, culture, language, heritage, museum, archives, geographical names and libraries sectors in the province.
The Master of Ceremonies, Katlego Maboe, kept the audience entertained throughout the evening. There were also performances by the UCT Big Band, Dizu Plaatjies, Diana Ferrus and Primrose Mrwebi, a dance group choreographed by Thandi Swartbooi and the David Kramer band.
Head of Department Brent Walters emphasised the importance of celebrating our shared heritage: “Tonight we celebrate our heritage, but also our identity. These awards are very important in recognising contributions to our Cape culture.” he said.
Acting Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Anton Bredell, said that events such as this prove the importance of arts and culture in communities: “Arts and culture contribute to nation building. It teaches us about our past so that we can build a better future. It also plays an important role in uniting communities.” he said.

DCAS encourages everyone to continue to build on freedom and democracy by celebrating each other’s success in the Western Cape arts, culture, language, heritage, museums, archives, geographical names and libraries sectors, better together.
