Human Rights Softball and Baseball Festival

The 2015 Annual Human Rights Inter-District Schools Softball and Baseball Festival, which was hosted by the Western Cape Softball Federation and the Western Cape Baseball Federation and was funded by the Western Cape Provincial Sport Confederation (WCPSC), supported by the Sport Development Directorate of the Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport (DCAS), took place at the Vangate Sports Complex from 20 – 22 March 2015.

It was a weekend of fun and friendly competition, in the spirit of human rights, between school children from all the districts in the Western Cape. The event created an aura of respect and love amongst the future leaders of our country. More than 300 children participated in this event.

“We wanted children to compete with pride and passion, remembering those who have made the ultimate sacrifice more than 50 years ago to ensure that we all have the rights we have today, which includes the right to compete in any sport our hearts desire,“ said WCPSC President, Mr. Goliath Munro.

The u13 and u17 girls’ teams from the Cape Metropole district won their respective finals while the Cape Winelands Boys u15 baseball team beat the Eden district in a tight final, 6-5.

“This festival creates opportunities for learners across all our districts in the Western Cape to participate in both softball and baseball and I’m very heartened by the fact that we have so much commitment from our coaches, administrators, volunteers and participants,” said Deputy Director of School Sport Development, Mr. Claude Meyer. “The commitment and support from the WCPSC, the Western Cape Softball Federation and the Western Cape Baseball Federation helps us at DCAS instil a sense of pride in these young learners and ultimately teach them the importance of human rights, competition and sport participation.”

DCAS offers youth the opportunity and access to get involved in sporting festivals. Communities should support these initiatives. Let us keep our children safe and engaged in healthy activities BETTER TOGETHER.
