Minister Marais mourns the loss of humanitarian and activist Dr Anwah Nagia

The Western Cape has lost another great voice with the passing of Dr Anwah Nagia. Dr Nagia committed his life to the telling and preserving of the stories of those people who suffered under the oppression of the apartheid system.

Dr Nagia served his community in various roles – he was an anti-apartheid activist, Chairman of the District Six Beneficiary and Redevelopment Trust, trustee of the District Six museum and supported various community organisations in their work. His compassion and empathy made him a very popular person in the Western Cape, and he was known as someone who would always try to help wherever he could.

Minister Anroux Marais said: “During this time, when we are supporting our museums in the re-opening of the economy, Dr Nagia’s presence will be greatly missed. He made great contributions to the District Six museum, and we will miss his passion and dedication.”

We express our heartfelt condolences to Dr Nagia’s family, friends, colleagues and all those who experienced his warmth through interacting with him. We have truly lost a giant in the Western Cape cultural sphere.
