Overstrand, Swartland and Mossel Bay K-9 and Rural Safety Units makes inroads

The Overstrand and Swartland Rural Safety Units (RSUs), along with their and the Mossel Bay K-9 units are continuing to make inroads into the fight against crime in their respective areas. Between 11 to 13 August 2023, these units with the assistance of various other municipal law enforcement agencies and the South African Police Service (SAPS), arrested thirteen (13) individuals for a variety of crimes. Of these, nine (9) were apprehended in the Overstrand municipal area, one (1) in the Mossel Bay region and three (3) in the Swartland.

As part of their continued preparation for their launch, the Mossel Bay K-9 unit had operations in the Grootbrak Rivier areas. The unit also confiscated 15 bankies of tik.

The Swartland arrests, which occurred in Malmesbury, Riebeek-Wes and Kalbaskraal, included:

• x2 dealing in drugs and
• x1 business robbery.

The units also confiscated:

• x23 half mandrax tablets and
• x15 bankies tik.

The Overstand arrests included:

• x1 for public unrest;
• x1 for the possession of abalone and
• x7 wanted suspects.

This unit confiscated:

• x190 units of abalone with an estimated street value of R 43 835.00.

Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Mr Reagen Allen said: “Given the taxi strike and the associated challenges, I am pleased to note that our units were still able to ensure that the criminal element was removed from our streets. They are certainly contributing to creating a safer Western Cape, where all can live in improved environments and in dignity. As the Western Cape Government, our support for these units will not waiver, as their interventions and operations are assisting us in achieving our ultimate goal, which is to reduce the murder rate by 50% by 2029.”

“I urge communities to never tire of working with these units, along with all other law enforcement units, including the South African Police Service (SAPS), neighbourhood watches (NHW’s) and community policing forums (CPF’s), so that we can ultimately eradicate crime from our areas,” concluded provincial Minister Reagen Allen.
