
Media Release by Bonginkosi Madikizela, Western Cape Minister of Transport and Public Works
Western Cape Provincial Traffic Services implemented a total of 233 integrated roadblock, vehicle check point and speed control operations across the province in the week of 4 to 10 January 2021, and 23 912 vehicles were stopped and checked.
A total of 547 speeding offences were recorded and 5 923 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness in the total amount of R6 586 706.
Fifteen vehicles were impounded and 115 were discontinued for unroadworthiness.
The highest speeds recorded were as follows:
A total of 428 charges were laid under the Disaster Management Act and fines to the total value of R848 100 were issued.

A total of 11 crashes occurred in the reporting period, and 11 fatalities were recorded:
It is encouraging to see a decline in fatalities on our roads this week while we have been dealing with excessive traffic volumes in both directions as many people are leaving while others are returning to work.
I would like to commend our traffic officers who are working around the clock to make sure road users are safe. Our operations will continue across the province until school returns.
The Western Cape Government has been and continues to be dedicated to managing the spread of Covid-19, including through the close monitoring of public transport, personal protective equipment support for public transport during the first months of the pandemic.
I am continuing with our Covid-19 awareness and enforcement campaign and visiting intersections and road operations where I encourage travelers to follow the Covid-19 golden rules of hygiene for keeping safe and to ensure public transport operators and passengers comply with lockdown regulations.
