Sixteen people died on Western Cape roads in different crashes this weekend. Forty-one people were arrested for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. Three others were arrested for false documents, reckless and negligent driving.
This weekend’s 25 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 2 288 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign.
A total of 1 306 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol.
The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Worcester at 1.28 mg/1 000 ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000 ml.
A total of 7 280 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 1 092 speeding offences were recorded. Three-hundred and thirty six (336) fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 389 850, 00.
A total of 144 vehicles were stopped and 35 of those drivers were forced to rest as part of a fatigue management exercise. The exercise took place from 21:00, Friday (26/06/2015) to 06:00, Sunday (28/06/2015). The exercise was held between Laingsburg and Beaufort West.
