Successes by Swartland, Overstrand and Mossel Bay K-9 and Rural Safety Units

Various successes by Swartland, Overstrand and Mossel Bay K-9 and Rural Safety Units.

The Mossel Bay, Overstrand and Swartland K-9 Units, in partnership with the Rural Safety Units (RSUs) in the Overstrand and Swartland areas, have continued with their crimefighting efforts in their respective areas. Between 26 February and 03 March 2024, these units with various other municipal law enforcement agencies and the South African Police Service, arrested sixteen (16) individuals for various crimes. Of these, nine (9) were apprehended in the Overstrand municipal area, and seven (7) in the Swartland. 

The Mossel Bay K-9 unit had various operations in Kwanonqaba, JCC Camp, and the Mossel Bay CBD. The unit also joined a workshop on second-hand goods and visited registered dealers. Second-hand goods, particularly scrap metal, are often used in illicit trading, which all our law enforcement units are seeking to eradicate.  

The Swartland units had operations in the broader Malmesbury area, including Kalbaskraal, Abbotsdale, Riverlands and Chatsworth and Moorreesburg. Individuals were arrested on the following charges: 

- x3 dealing in drugs; and 

- x4 possession of drugs.

The units also confiscated:

- x299 whole mandrax tablets; 

- x15 half mandrax tablets; 

- 8.13g of tik; and

- 8kg compressed dagga.   

Amongst others the Overstand arrests included:

- x3 for possession of drugs; and

- x4 wanted suspects. 

This unit confiscated:

- x3 mandrax tablets; and

- x1 bankies tik.

Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety, Reagen Allen said, “We have placed our K9 and RSUs in areas outside the metro, to ensure greater safety is achieved across the province. Their efforts are commendable. As the Western Cape Government, we will continue to support these units, as we want our residents to live in safer environments.”
