Twenty-five Motorists Arrested for Drinking and Driving

On 27 and 28 March 2015, 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape saw a total of 3 091 vehicles stopped as part of Provincial Traffic Services safety campaign. Twenty-four people, including seven pedestrians, died on the province’s roads.

A total of 1 740 drivers were screened for (being under suspicion of) driving under the influence of alcohol resulting in 25 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Somerset West at 1.04 mg/1 000ml, which was five times the legal limit of 0.24 mg/1 000ml.

A total of 1 774 vehicles were screened for speeding of which 224 speeding offences were recorded.  A total of 280 fines were issued for various traffic violations ranging from driver to vehicle fitness to the amount of R 343 200.

Highest Speeds

• 159 km/h in a 120 km/h zone on the N1 in the Brackenfell service area.
• 113km/h in a 100 km/h zone on the N1 in the Beaufort West service area.
• 120 km/h in an 80 km/h zone on the N2 in the Knysna service area.
