Upgrading of Sandringham Road progressing well

Work on the Department of Transport and Public Works project to upgrade the gravel section of the R304 and Sandringham Road near Joostenberg Vlakte to a surfaced road is progressing well. Almost half of the road has already been surfaced.

This R49 million project started in October 2016 and is scheduled for completion in October 2017. The road is currently closed to through traffic, although local businesses and residents have access.

The project is creating a number of short-term Expanded Public Works Programme employment and skills training opportunities for 26 men and two women. To date, a total of R677 600 has been spent on local labour and 1 283 person-days of work have been created for people from the Stellenbosch local municipal area.

The high-quality road infrastructure that the Department provides is an important component of a safe and effective transport system, and an enabler of economic and social development in the Western Cape.
