On Sunday, 4 August 2024, Premier Alan Winde and Provincial Minister of Cultural Affairs and Sport, Ricardo Mackenzie, will host an activation ceremony to celebrate the successful inscription as a World Heritage Site of two rock shelters in the Western Cape (Diepkloof Rock Shelter near Elands Bay and Pinnacle Point Site Complex in Mossel Bay) alongside Sibhudu Cave in KwaZulu-Natal.
These sites – referred to as the Cradle of Human Culture – form part of the South African World Heritage Site nomination, ‘The Emergence of Modern Human Behaviour: The Pleistocene Occupation Sites of South Africa.’
Premier Winde and Provincial Minister Mackenzie will be joined by national Minister of Sport, Arts and Culture, Gayton McKenzie; Executive Mayor of Mossel Bay, Dirk Kotzé; Executive Mayor of Garden Route District Municipality, Andrew Stroebel; the KZN Department of Sport, Arts and Culture; KZN’s Amafa Institute and a variety of guests from the heritage and tourism sector.
