Acquiring, Losing and Resuming Citizenship

Description:

South African citizens have certain rights that people who are not citizens do not have. For example, the right to:

  • vote
  • be given a South African passport
  • come into South Africa after living somewhere else.

People who are not citizens must get permission to enter South Africa. If they want to stay, they must also get a permit to live here.

Citizenship can be acquired or lost. And people who used to be citizens can resume their citizenship.

Instructions:

The Department of Home Affairs can assist you with:

  • finding out your citizenship status
  • becoming a citizen (naturalisation)
  • resuming citizenship
  • renouncing citizenship
  • dual citizenship.
