The Cystic Fibrosis Clinic caters for patients who have proven cases of Cystic Fibrosis. New cases or urgent problems will be referred to the Cystic Fibrosis Consultant on call for pre-referral arrangements.

What is Cystic Fibrosis?
Cystic fibrosis (also known as CF or mucoviscidosis) is a genetic disorder that affects the lungs, pancreas, liver and intestine.

It is characterised by the abnormal transport of chloride and sodium across body tissues, causing thick mucus-like secretions.

The symptoms of cystic fibrosis are

  • Salty-tasting skin

  • Poor growth and poor weight gain despite a normal eating habbits
  • Accumulation of thick, sticky mucus
  • Frequent chest infections
  • Coughing or shortness of breath
  • Bowel obstruction

Symptoms often appear in infancy and childhood.
