George, the second largest city in the Western Cape, is located on the Garden Route, halfway between Cape Town and Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). George has grown exponentially in the last 10 years, making it a desirable location for people to settle.
Most of the city's more than 290 000 residents (StatsSA, Census 2022) work in one of the several facilities available to them, including banks, conference facilities, retail stores, transport and sporting facilities and the hospitality industry. The community needs work opportunities for young people, homeless shelters, access to housing, development opportunities, and access to free resources.
The Conville WCG eCentre opened in April 2013 and is located inside the Conville Library. The community welcomed the opening of the eCentre with excitement because it meant access to computers and the use of free services. The eCentre, surrounded by creches, primary schools, a clinic and a police station, serves between 700 and 1 000 users monthly and has over 2 000 registered users. Most of the users are unemployed, general workers or small business owners.
The eCentre staff aim to alleviate as many of the challenges and needs of the community as possible. The eCentre also assists local people to communicate more effectively with the government and communities worldwide by providing access to email, the internet and various government services.
