On Thursday, 28 February 2013, Western Cape Minister of Social Development Albert Fritz handed over R1.3 million to Rape Crisis Cape Town director Kathleen Dey at the NGO's office in Observatory. This is over and above R900 000 funding received from the department. Rape Crisis had to retrench all but one of its permanent staff last year due to funding shortfalls. Executive Editor of Cape Argus, Mr Gasant Abarder is cycling in the Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour, to raise funds for Rape Crisis, from the private sector and ordinary citizens. Minister Fritz challenged the private sector and citizens to equal or even better the R1.3 million contributed by the Western Cape Government. The organization offers support to rape victims, encourages survivors to report rape and the organization is involved in advocacy programmes to create awareness about rape. |
