Minister Albert Fritz Celebrates International Older Persons' Day

2016
(Western Cape Government)

1 October is celebrated as International Day for Older Persons. Each year in commemoration of this auspicious day, the Department of Social Development celebrates the elderly. This year has been no different. The Western Cape Minister of Social Development, Albert Fritz, spent time with the residents of the Rehoboth Old Age Home in Hanover Park. Minister Fritz was accompanied by youth from the local community, who did volunteer maintenance and clean-up work on the grounds of the facility. During the morning tea, the youth spent quality time engaging with the residents.

Anzil Lawrence praised the elderly for their contribution in society and added the role of youth in the community. "As young people we must show respect to the elderly. We want you to know that we care for our elderly not just in our families but also in our greater community, which is why we decided to come to Rehoboth today".

A Rehoboth resident replied, "As you can see, Rehoboth is one of the best facilities. We want you to know that Hanover Park is a lively place
(not just crime ridden). And having these youth here today, it has renewed our faith in young people, as so often young people have lost all respect".

Through this exercise, the minister wants to encourage intergenerational outreach work. The youth should not forget the seniors in their families and communities, and should be encouraged to look out for the wellbeing of our senior citizens.
